Site investigation and remediation of contaminated sites (Legislative Decree 152/2006)

Our firm has developed strong, specific experience in the remediation of contaminated sites—a situation increasingly common, especially in highly industrialised areas. Environmental protection regulations and the emergence of a more mature civic awareness require both economic operators and competent authorities to take an increasingly active and diligent role in addressing this issue.

Preliminary investigations

This activity aims to define the type and extent of contamination of environmental matrices at a given site through the collection of one or more representative samples of the environmental matrix affected by the contamination event.

Characterisation plans

Through the Characterisation Plan, all site characteristics are identified and qualitative data are provided regarding potential pollution present in different environmental matrices (soil, groundwater and surface waters).

Design of emergency measures

Emergency safety measures are implemented promptly following accidents or when a clear situation of environmental pollution hazard or risk to human health is identified. These measures aim to remove or isolate sources of contamination and implement mitigation actions to prevent and eliminate immediate dangers to people and the surrounding environment.

Risk assessment

Risk assessment represents an estimate of the health consequences of a potentially harmful event, in terms of the probability that such consequences occur.

Site-specific risk assessment (AdR) connected to a contaminated site is currently one of the most advanced procedures for assessing the degree of contamination of an area and defining intervention priorities and methods. Our technicians carry out these analyses using dedicated software for mathematical modelling of “source–migration–target” pathways in order to define Risk Threshold Concentrations (CSR) and remediation objectives.

Remediation projects

The Operational Remediation Project (POB) is the technical-procedural document that details the safety and remediation measures for a contaminated site, based on a site-specific risk assessment that defines objectives and technologies to be adopted. Approved by the competent authorities, the POB includes the description of actions, timelines, estimated costs and environmental monitoring plans to reduce pollutant concentrations to acceptable levels.
