Environmental Monitoring

Environmental Monitoring

Our commitment to the environment is reflected, during the construction and operation phases of works, in environmental monitoring activities designed to verify potential impacts and develop any necessary mitigation actions.

Environmental monitoring can be carried out in the pre-construction, construction and post-construction phases, through specific Environmental Monitoring Projects (EMP/PMA) that define methods. Monitoring activities are performed using high-precision technical equipment (calibrated by SIT-accredited centres) and accredited laboratories (ACCREDIA). They mainly include:

Water quality
Noise and vibrations
Vegetation and fauna
Electromagnetic fields
Air quality
Soil and subsoil
Social environment

Water quality
Analysis and characterisation of groundwater; determination of main physico-chemical parameters, including continuous monitoring; monitoring of the water table level through measurement of piezometric surfaces, including continuous monitoring; monitoring and measurement of pollutant dispersion and diffusion in aquifers.
Analysis and assessment of surface water quality aimed at determining the main physico-chemical and bacteriological parameters of rivers, streams, lakes and reservoirs. Flow and discharge measurements, biological sampling, macrophyte community analyses, fish fauna surveys, ecosystem quality assessment and river functionality index.

Air quality

Monitoring activities aim to determine any changes in air quality status at the site under examination due to construction and operation of works, for key parameters (PM10, PM2.5, TSP, NOx, Benzene, PAHs, CO, O₃, Metals). Monitoring campaigns are carried out using mobile laboratories, gravimetric samplers, continuous analysers, passive samplers and stations for recording key meteorological data.
Studio Mattioli also monitors airborne asbestos fibres in accordance with sampling and analysis methods established by Ministerial Decree 6/09/1994.

Noise and vibrations
Noise and vibration control in project areas, during pre-construction monitoring, serves as a tool to understand current environmental conditions, verify quality levels and ensure compliance with regulatory limits. During construction and operation, it becomes a tool to control the dynamics of reference indicators and the effectiveness of mitigation measures, both preventive and corrective.
Noise monitoring is performed using instruments compliant with standards set by Article 2 of the Ministerial Decree 16 March 1998 “Techniques for detecting and measuring noise pollution”, including Class 1 integrating sound level meters, calibrated at the start of measurement and periodically verified as required by sector regulations, meteorological stations, and traffic counting systems for vehicle circulation during measurements. Vibration monitoring is carried out using equipment consisting of triads of velocimeters and accelerometers.

Soil and subsoil

Analysis and characterisation of soils to verify any presence and extent of interference factors from works under construction on the pedological and qualitative characteristics of soils in areas affected by construction activities, which will be returned to current uses after works are completed. Specifically, the evolution of soil “quality” is analysed in terms of fertility (soil compaction, changes in drainage characteristics, mixing of layers, infiltration, etc.), productive agricultural capacity, ability to protect the underlying hydrographic structure, regulate infiltration and prevent subsequent water pollution.

Vegetation and fauna
Monitoring of vegetation and fauna components through surveys of vegetation mosaic phytocoenoses adjacent to construction areas; identification of valuable plant specimens; vegetation community surveys through phytosociological analysis; monitoring of mobile fauna presence; qualitative and quantitative surveys of bird communities; monitoring of fish populations; bat monitoring. Data are delivered in the form of tables, monitoring sheets, statistical analyses and periodic reports.

Social environment

Monitoring and analysis of objective indicators and public opinion analysis.

Electromagnetic fields
Studio Mattioli conducts measurements of electric and electromagnetic field intensity in accordance with CEI 211-6, using qualified personnel and properly calibrated instruments. In compliance with Legislative Decree 81/2008, we perform simulations of exposure to electromagnetic fields for a specific site and prepare the related technical report.
